Hi Charles,
You are quite right in media companies not getting it. A point I would like to make is that it is very rare I can listen to anything worthwhile on the radio. It’s the same predicatable rubbish that radio stations play, not to mention, the breaks from the commercial is basically centered around the ego of the DJ or announcer.
I have stopped buying CDs back in the 90’s. The reason is that music has been a commercialized business (in itself is not bad, I can understand that money needs to be made) that stratigically churns out “artists” and who will predictably will make a hit but then produce nothing but garbage later on. I don’t know what the mechanism of this selling out is, but it has been bad for the consumer.
I think artists, songwriters, anyone still with a soul and genuine wishes to share their talent to the world should really start looking hard into themselves, and find an avenue to channel those talents, rather than being forced to sell out.
I probably will never buy a CD again. I simply can’t bring myself to support a system that is too broken.
Record companies complain of lost sales. Well what about artists who have been dead a long time ago (ex. Elvis) and still making money? I wonder who makes the most money out of that scheme?
By the way, I don’t download music either. I simply have lost interest in the medium. If I listen to anything at all, it is from my old CD collection, all from artists who actually had something to say.
